V-Ray Graphite Shader

18/5/2014

Just me trying to create a realistic graphite (pencil) shader with V-Ray (should also be a 1:1 conversion to Mental Ray) and I think the results are interesting enough to warrant their own short journal post.
Here's a quick preview of how it looks thus far as both still images and animation.
These images are straight from 3ds Max. No post work has been done.

UPDATE (27/08/2017): Several people have been asking about how the graphite effect is made, and while I started writing a short tutorial some time ago, I never found the time to complete it and add it to the navigation menu.

The (incomplete) tutorial can be found at this page for the time being: V-Ray Graphite Material
Some images may be hard to read, so open those in a new tab to view at full resolution.
